I am currently reading a book that I find so entertaining and well written. The title of the book even makes me smile. It's called The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (I know, the name's long.). Isn't that title amazing? You can usually tell what the book's going to be about when you read the title; but when I read this title I was lost after the second word. What's Guernsey? Well, it is a British-owned island in the English Channel. It is inhabited by natives who speak English although the island is closer to France than it is to England.
And before I tell the plot of this marvelous book, I want to mention that it is a compilation of letters written between Juliet, a columnist and author of some local newspapers and a book called Izzy Biggerstaff goes to War, Sidney, Juliet's publisher and dear friend of 20 plus years, Sophie, Juliet's best friend and Sidney's sister, Mark Reynolds, who is Juliet's suitor who is begging her to marry him, and natives in Guernsey who are all members of this literary society. It is quite amazing how Juliet found out about this society.
One of its members, Dawsey had written her one time because he'd acquired a book with her name and address on it- a book about a poet and writer he truly admired. So then she was introduced to his society through letter writing (the name of the society sparked Juliet's interest, naturally) and immediately fell in love with them and their story and even thought this would make a great topic for her next novel. They tell her about their experience in WW2 during the German occupation of their island. It was really brutal what many of the society members had to endure. Really, it is just amazing. I can't recommend anything better right now.
